Evolution and Worship

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

If evolution is true, then why is the word “worship” in our language?

Why is “worship” a word in most languages?

If evolution is true, then the answer must be that evolutionary processes re-programmed the DNA of a bunch of sea sponges (who show no signs of worshipping) into new DNA for worshipping atom-bags called humans. Evolution made enough mistakes in replicating the DNA of those happy little sea sponges to eventually create humans with an inclination toward extravagant admiration toward something other than themselves.

Is the desire to worship wrong? Not if evolution created it; how can it be? But still the question is why?

Of course, the “evolution is the answer, what’s the question? T-shirt” crowd will tell us that worship served some evolutionarily beneficial purpose. Over time, worship was found to provide some blah, blah, blah societal good, some blah, blah, blah survival advantage, and some more anti-evolutionary story telling, blah, blah, and blah.

It’s like a student who looks to the back of the math book for the answer first and then works the problem. Uncurious evolutionists, believing the answer they are told, simply scribble down elaborate reasons to explain worship among humans. Then these reasons get published and generate extravagant admiration from other uncurious evolutionists.

And, of course, we can take comfort in the fact that the “evolution is the answer” programmed response also explains why every other advanced living thing is found in nature to worship, right? Penguins worship. And zebras worship. And worms worship, and jelly fi … wait just a minute.

Hmmmm.

What if the assumed “evolution is the answer” automatic response is wrong?

Why do human beings, alone among all creation, worship?

Is there something special about human beings that they feel the need to pay homage to something bigger than themselves? Maybe even a bigger something that they perceive as their creator? Maybe there is something inspirational in the deep human desire to worship?

Inspiration? How does the notion of inspiration fit into the cold, heartless world of evolution?

Try this little verse out for inspiration:

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before evolution, our maker, for the evolutionary process alone is our creator and we are the people of its cosmos, the flock under its charge.

Does that warm your heart and move you with a feeling of worship?

It should not, even if you are an evolutionist. If evolution is true, why on earth would any person bow down to worship anything?

But we find that evolutionists do, in fact, worship something. When it comes to devotion, reverence, adoration and honor, guess who most evolutionists bow to?

Yes, you are correct: Evolutionists readily bow to the same person most people on earth bow to: themselves. Evolutionists bow to their superior intellect. They bow to their belief that they, among the creationists of the world, are not just smarter; they are wiser. They bow to their supposed ability to master truth so easily: Evolution seems self-evidently true. They bow to their seeming un-natural ability to easily resolve impossible thoughts, such as “why is there something instead of nothing.”

Whether recognized or not, evolutionists, Darwinists, atheists, and other God-less “ists” (with respect to human origins) of the world bow. And they kneel. But they bow and kneel not to evolution, their creator, but to themselves.

“Man is the measure of all things,” they say, feeling smug in the good company of the ancient Greek, Protagoras. And while this is a very speciest (look it up) thing to say, they are not wrong. If evolution is true.

Maybe the self-serving kneeling of evolutionists can be seen in its best light as good preparation for their unfortunate, inevitable, future. Their ability to bow and kneel now will become useful later for a different purpose that they will not like.

To see why, try this alternate verse out for inspiration:

Oh come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and flock under his care.

Does not that verse touch on something inside you with a feeling of worship? Does it not strike your heart in a way that leaves you yearning for the object of true worship?

If so, we would urge you to embrace this next sentence in the book where we found that verse: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not hearden your hearts . . ."

Do you hear his voice? The voice of your creator, in whose image you were created? If so, don’t hearden your heart. Stop worshipping yourself and turn your eyes to your true creator. Because the book the verse above came from also states this:

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Your true creator not only deserves your worship, but you will find yourself at peace when you are under his care. And you will never regret worship to your true creator today. Because bowing today means you are naturally ready to bow in the future, along with everyone else in heaven and earth.

But your bowing will not be forced.

Think about it.
